MARIUPOL COMMERCIAL SEA PORT
     
     
     
     
    Birth of the Port of Mariupol was a logical continuation of impetuous
    development  of industrial South of Russia in the second part of 19-th century. 
      
    Shallow water wharf in Kalmius-river mouth didn't correspond the require-ments of fleet development and development of mining and metallurgical industry in Donetsk Basin. 
      
    In 1886 construction of a deep water Port was begun in Mariupol near Zintzeva Gully. 
      
    This construction was planned for 5 year period, but it was finished in 3 years under pressure of manufacturers. 
      
    On 21 August (on 2 September In new style) 1889 18 cars loaded with coal-about 11.000 poods were shippered to the sea-front of the Port. 
      
    After public prayer in the presence of the Minister of Russia Railways and the governor of Mariupol Mr. Harazaev, the first loading of cargo was performed into the ship "Medvedytsa" of Russian Navigation and Commerce Company which left on 22 August (3 September) for the place of destination. 
      
    This date is considered to be the beginning of the Port exploitation. 
      
    The Port had a significant importance for development of region industry and the whole country, suffice it to say that the Port of Mariupol did not play military role and it was on the third place in Russia by volume of assignations during 1867-1904.
