SEA PORT
Birth of the Port of Mariupol was a logical
continuation of impetuous
development of industrial South of
Russia in the second part of 19-th century.
Shallow water wharf in Kalmius-river mouth
didn't correspond the require-ments of fleet development and development
of mining and metallurgical industry in Donetsk Basin.
In 1886 construction of a deep water Port
was begun in Mariupol near Zintzeva Gully.
This construction was planned for 5 year
period, but it was finished in 3 years under
pressure of manufacturers.
On 21 August (on 2 September In new style)
1889 18 cars loaded with coal-about 11.000
poods were shippered to the sea-front of the Port.
After public prayer in the presence of
the Minister of Russia Railways and the governor of Mariupol Mr. Harazaev,
the first loading of cargo was performed into the
ship "Medvedytsa" of Russian Navigation and Commerce Company which left
on 22 August (3 September) for the place of
destination.
This date is considered to be the beginning
of the Port exploitation.
The Port had a significant importance for
development of region industry and the whole
country, suffice it to say that the Port of Mariupol did not play military
role and it was on the third
place in Russia by volume of assignations during 1867-1904.
